About the Coalition

The National Black Disability Coalition (NBDC) is a groundbreaking initiative led by the Ase Community Foundation for Black Canadians with Disabilities. This is a one-year initiative, from November 2024 to November 2025.

This national coalition is led by Black-disabled people, leaders, researchers, and advocates who work collectively with the community and allies to address systemic barriers and stigma at the intersection of anti-Black racism, ableism, and gender-based violence.

A Canada where Black-disabled people and communities thrive, lead, and are fully engaged—free from systemic barriers and intersectional oppression.

  • Provide a supportive network that amplifies the voices of Black-disabled communities
  • Promote cross-sector collaboration and advocacy
  • Contribute to coalition-wide initiatives, including research, advocacy, policy, events, training and development, and community engagement

The Executive Committee leads the Coalition's work, with direct input from Affinity Group Leads and Members who are Black and disabled. Members-at-Large further strengthen this movement. The Steering Committee designed the Coalition's structure, while an Advisory and Expert Panel provides ongoing guidance.

Membership & Composition

The coalition is composed of leadership roles, affinity members and national membership who work collectively. Join this transformative movements that works collectively towards systemic change at the intersection of blackness, disability and genders. Affinity group and national membership is continuous.

Executive Committee | May 2025 - November 2025

The Executive Committee provides strategic and operational leadership and works closely with members, affinity groups, and Ase Community staff. Black people with disabilities lead the coalition in collaboration with community leaders across Canada and the territories. The Committee will facilitate member meetings and leadership development sessions and write the final report. There are 12 executive leadership positions, including chair, co-chair, secretary, executive lead, youth directors, and community directors.

Affinity Groups | May 2025 – November 2025

Affinity Group Leads are Black disabled people who facilitate member participation and engagement of affinity members. Affinity group members and advocates will identify systemic barriers, drive targeted solutions, and report to the Executive Committee. There are currently three infinity groups: Youth | Entrepreneurship | Research & Policy | Health

Affinity Group Members:
Membership is open to Black disabled people, community advocates, and professionals. Members participate in discussions, identify community needs and opportunities, and attend sessions. Membership is open to everyone, with a focus on Black disabled people.

- Youth Affinity Group Members receive $500
- Other Affinity Group Members receive $250

National Membership | May 2025 – November 2025

Everyone is welcome to join the coalition and become a member. National members are invited to attend events, town halls, projects, and learning seminars. Your membership and engagement will enrich the coalition, foster broad-based advocacy, and enhance collective capacity.

Note: There is no remuneration for National members.

Steering Committee | November 2024 – April 2025

The Steering Committee oversaw the design and development of the National Black Disability Coalition structure and terms of reference, emphatically embedding culturally affirming, accessible, and inclusive practices. The coalition was led by Black disabled leaders, community and industry leaders, advocates, researchers, entrepreneurs, policy experts, and community organizers.

Advisory and Expert Panel | June - December 2025

Provides the Executive Committee guidance, resources, and expert knowledge.
